XI. The Legion’s Pillar of Fire – To Lead Us Forth United
From the Series: Beneath the Standard of Mary – The Heart and Voice of an Auxiliary Member
Go back to Exodus for a moment.
God’s people are fleeing Egypt. Behind them is Pharaoh’s army, chariots, soldiers, the full force of the most powerful empire in the ancient world bearing down on them. Ahead of them is the sea. There is nowhere to go. And in that impossible moment God does two things simultaneously. He parts the water to open a way forward. And He places a wall of fire between His people and everything that is pursuing them.
The enemy cannot advance, and the people cannot be touched. The fire holds them back.
That is the image the Legion prayer reaches for when it asks for a faith that will be our Pillar of Fire. Not a gentle flickering candle, or a warm comfortable hearth. A wall. A barrier. A presence so powerful and so complete that what is coming after you simply cannot get through it.
That kind of faith does not just believe in God. It is surrounded by Him.
I live a very simple life. I say that not as a complaint and not as a boast, just as a fact. The pull of things has simply lost its grip on me. The wall is up, so very little from the outside world gets through it. Not because I am rigid or closed off from life, but because when you are truly protected by something that powerful you stop being afraid of what is on the other side of it.
That is what the Pillar of Fire does. It protects your prayer life. It protects what you believe. It protects your love for God from the thousand quiet voices that are constantly trying to erode it. It gives you the ability to defend what is sacred, including the honor of Our Lady, not with anger or argument but with a calm unshakeable certainty that comes from knowing exactly where you stand and exactly who is standing with you.
Now here is where this prayer does something countercultural and extraordinary. The world has a saying about risk and investment that most people have heard their entire lives. Do not put all your eggs in one basket, spread it out, diversify your investments. Never bet everything on one thing because if that one thing fails you lose everything.
That is very sound, very worldly advice.
And it is completely wrong when it comes to God.
In God’s economy the only winning strategy is to put every single egg you have into His basket. Everything. Your future, your security, your plans, your fears, your hopes, your family, your ministry, your health, your very life. All of it must go into His hands. 100% Completely, without hedging, and without any backup plan that does not involve Him.
Because here is what happens when you do that. The Pillar of Fire rises. Not visibly, you will not see it with your eyes. But you will know it is there. You will feel the protection of a presence that is not your own strength holding things together. You will walk through situations that should have destroyed you and come out the other side not because you were clever or resilient or well prepared but because something was standing between you and the worst of it that had nothing to do with you.
Jesus, I trust in You. That is not just a prayer. That is the act of construction. Every time you say those words and mean them you are adding another layer to the wall. You are building the Pillar of Fire one act of surrender at a time. You are telling God with everything you are, I am not going to try to manage this myself, and I am not going to hold anything back. I am putting it all in Your hands and I am fully trusting You to be what You have always said You are. And He will be, He always has been.
The prayer also says something we cannot skip past. To lead us forth united. Not just individually protected. But 100% together, moving in the same direction. Because the Pillar of Fire in Exodus did not protect one person at a time, it covered the whole community. It held back the enemy for all of them simultaneously while they crossed together.
That is what a faith community looks like when it is truly animated by this kind of fire. Not a collection of individuals, each quietly pursuing their own spiritual journey in parallel. A body of believers, moving together, and protected together. Led together toward the same destination by the same God who has been leading His people through impossible terrain since the beginning of time.
Put on the armor of God, the shield of faith, the sword of His Word, the breastplate of righteousness. Scripture lays it out with a clarity that has never aged. We are not walking through a peaceful landscape on a pleasant afternoon stroll. We are moving through a battlefield. And the only protection that actually holds, the only shield that cannot be broken, the only fire that cannot be extinguished, is God Himself.
Put everything you have into His basket and let the wall of fire rise.
And then move forward together without looking back at what is behind you. It cannot follow you there.
